Movie Review: The Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger offers nothing new to the genre (western action adventure) and seemed a lot less interesting than it should be. The story's been done many times before and none of the dialogues exchanged between the characters are neither catchy or memorable. Depp's Captain Sparrow is found to be more interesting than his performance of Tonto in the film.

The film does have a few funny moments: Tonto's odd behaviour and mannerisms, the appearance of the white horse to save the day or the interaction between Tonto and Reid did manage to provide a few laughs but the film is overly long...it's bloated length is an overkill that neither the oddly formed on-screen friendship between the two leads, the humour or the amount of action presented can save it. (149 mins for a western film, seriously?)

The scene stealer for the film is mostly certainly either Tonto or the white horse, their roles seemingly overshadowed the lone ranger's role in the film...leading the show instead of the titular protagonist...which it shouldn't. The white horse is seemingly more of a hero than both of them as it always knows the two leads' whereabouts to save them at the right time. Most of the major action set pieces takes place in trains with guns shootings heard everywhere. This film costs $250 million to make, which is more expensive than any of the movie blockbusters found out there, one couldn't help but wonder where the money is spent on.

Rating: 6/10

  1. I agree: The film is definitely too long. They should have gotten rid of the flash-forward subplot with Tonto as an old man. That would have trimmed 15 minutes off the run-time.

Nonetheless, I did find the film quite hilarious at time. It should have been called Tonto, as he is the real lead character of the film.

I wrote a short essay on the The Lone Ranger called "Laughing at Racial Stereotypes." If you would like to read it, I am open to any feedback: https://christopherjohnlindsay.wordpress.com/2015/05/05/the-lone-ranger-2013/
