Complete List of Autobot Characters in the Transformers film series

The purpose of this article is to provide further understanding about the Autobots in the Transformers film series, to prepare for the upcoming sequel, Age of Extinction. Readers should have a clear understanding about the characters after reading this article.

For my review of Transformers: Age of Extinction, please visit the link below:

Note: The following article is written based on information provided in the films, online transformers fan sites such as wikia, tfwiki, tfw2005, seibertron.com. The pictures are taken from google, the previously mentioned online sites and the films as well (for the transformers designs).

The characters will be explained according to the order they appear in films. This article will be edited from time to time for any updates (mostly for Age of extinction characters).

Autobots are a faction of sentient robots from the planet Cybertron. It is explained to be the short term of Autonomous Robotic Organisms in the film.

By the end of Dark of the Moon, nine (or ten if Wheelie survived) Autobots remain on Earth: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Sideswipe, Dino, Roadbuster, Leadfoot, and Topspin and Brains.

The following picture shows the status of nine autobots in the Age of Extinction:
Optimus Prime: Unknown
Bumblebee: ???
Ratchet: Apprehended
Leadfoot: Unknown
Sideswipe: Slain
Dino: Slain
Topspin: Apprehended
Jolt: Slain
Arcee: Slain

So it was confirmed that the autobots, not just the decepticons, are hunted down and killed one by one, by humans. It is safe to say Optimus and Bumblebee remain alive and well, but the rest seems otherwise.
From left: Hound, Su Yue Ming, Joshua Joyce, Bumblebee,
Shane Dyson, Tessa Yeager, Cade Yeager, Optimus Prime, Drift, Crosshairs.

Transformers

Optimus Prime
Alt mode:
  • 1997 Peterbilt 379 semi-trailer truck (TF, ROTF, DOTM)
  • rusty 1973 Marmon semi cab-over truck, Western Star 4900 Custom Phantom semi-truck (AOE)
The leader of the Autobots, the sole inheritor of the Matrix of Leadership and the last of the Dynasty of Primes. Dedicated to stop Megatron and his decepticon armies from obtaining the Allspark and conquering other worlds. Initially comes to Earth with the intention to destroy the Allspark to end the war.
Optimus in his new ‘knight’ form and his previous robot form

In Revenge of the Fallen, he was killed by Megatron during a battle along with Starscream and Grindor for protecting Sam Witwicky, but later revived by the Matrix with Sam’s help.  Using parts given by a critically-injured Jetfire, Optimus went to destroy the star harvester, recovered the Matrix, and killed the Fallen.

In Dark of the Moon, Optimus has a mech-tech trailer, which contains enhanced weapons, a shield and a flight gear designed by Que. Stopped the Decepticon invasion in Chicago.

Jetwing Optimus

For Age of Extinction, Optimus Prime reformats and assume a new appearance, his ‘knight form’. He has a new sword (Sword of Judgment) and shield (Vector Shield) obtained from Lockdown's spaceship, and will tame and ride Grimlock into battle.

Bumblebee
 Bumblebee’s previous forms
Bumblebee’s new look
Alt mode:
  • 2014 Chevrolet Camaro concept (AOE)
  • 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Super Sport version (ROTF)
  • vintage 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS (AOE)
  • 2006 Chevrolet Camaro (TF)
  • 2011 Chevrolet Camaro (DOTM)
  • 1974 Chevrolet Camaro (TF)
One of Optimus Prime’s most trusted and brave lieutenants. Willing to sacrifice his life to protect others and stop the Decepticons. Bumblebee communicates with radio because of his damaged vocal processor during the war in Cybertron. He is very close to Sam Witwicky and regards him as a friend.

In Revenge of the Fallen, Bumblebee becomes stronger after having his severed legs repaired by Ratchet. In Dark of the Moon, Bumblebee has gone through some changes by Que. In Age of Extinction, Bumblebee survives and not hunted down by humans. He will be riding with the Dinobot Strafe in the film.

Ratchet
Alt mode:
  • search and rescue 2004 Hummer H2
Autobot’s medical officer, responsible for fixing Bumblebee’s severed legs and Optimus’ injuries in the film. One of the few Autobots survived from the Mission City Battle, Egypt Giza Battle and Chicago invasion. Hunted down and killed by humans in Age of Extinction.

Ironhide
Alt mode:
  • modified 2006 GMC TopKick C4500 medium-duty truck (TF, ROTF, DOTM)
Autobot’s toughest weapons specialist and Optimus Prime’s old friend. Ironhide replaces Jazz as Second-In-Command in the ROTF and DOTM films. He is mercilessly killed by Sentinel Prime in Dark of the Moon when Sentinel reveals that he made a deal with Megatron and betrays the Autobots.

Jazz
Alt mode:
  • modified Pontiac Solstice (TF)
An autobot lieutenant and Optimus Prime’s Second-In-Command. He is one of the smaller Autobots in the group. He was killed by Megatron during the battle in Mission City in the first film.

Revenge of the Fallen

Sideswipe
Alt mode:
  • silver Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept (ROTF)
  • convertible Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept (DOTM)
Autobot’s most agile combat instructor who prefers melee combat compared to range weapons. He has arm-mounted detachable sword-like blades, and having wheels for feet, he moves around skating, much like Bonecrusher. It is hinted that he is hunted down and killed by humans prior to the events in Age of Extinction.

Skids and Mudflap
Alt mode:
  • Old ice-cream truck (together in ROTF)
  • green Chevrolet Beat (Skids) (ROTF)
  • red Chevrolet Trax (Mudflap) (ROTF)
Autobot infiltrators known as the Twins. Mudflap and his twin Skids are a result of a split spark, and share a close bond that enables them to coordinate their attacks in battle. Mudflap is hyperactive, noisy, argumentative, and eager to impress while Skids thinks that he’s the smarter of the two. They spend a lot of time arguing with each other or outdoing each other in crazy stunts.

The twins caused much distaste and have negative criticisms among critics and general viewers due to their irritating personalities and the characters don’t serve the plot at all. Because of that, they’re completely removed from DOTM film. However, in the novel and comic book adaptations of the DOTM film, they were killed by Sentinel Prime along with Ironhide.

Arcee
Alt mode:
  • blue Suzuki B-King 2008, purple MV Agusta F4 R312 and pink Ducati 848 (ROTF)
Autobot’s field commander, they’re three female Autobots driven by a single consciousness that transform into motorcycles. Despite her smaller size compared with others, Arcee compensates with speed and aggressive maneuvers, together with the ability to control three bodies at once, this makes her one of the most dangerous Autobots around. Arcee were shown to be killed at the Egypt Giza battle in ROTF film and did not appear in DOTM.

Jetfire
Alt mode:
  • Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (ROTF)
An ancient Decepticon Seeker who decides to become an Autobot after his awakening due to the small fragment of the AllSpark. In his day, Jetfire was said (by himself) to be a living legend both in the air and on the battlefield. His old age made him choose to fight on the side of the Autobots. He's got rust in places and walks with a cane, which can be a battle axe. He creaks, does not transform well and is practically falling apart. Despite his age, he is still able to decipher the language of the Primes and activate space bridges at will to teleport across great distances (but without precision due to his old age).

Jetfire was one of the Seekers dispatched by The Fallen to locate the Matrix of Leadership after the Dynasty of Primes hid it on Earth. However, Jetfire and the other Seekers were unable to locate the Tomb of the Primes. Eventually, the Fallen abandoned the Seekers and they were forced to go into stasis lock due to the lack of energon. For many years, a dormant Jetfire had hidden in his alternate mode at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. In the ROTF film, he sacrificed his spark to give his parts for Optimus Prime to defeat the Fallen.

Jolt
Alt mode:
  • Blue Chevrolet Volt (ROTF)
An Autobot technician armed with a pair of electric whips. He was a last-minute addition to the Autobot cast. He assists the Autobots and NEST military forces in the Egypt Giza battle. After Jetfire sacrificed himself to assist Optimus to defeat the Fallen, Jolt used his whips to fuse Jetfire's parts onto Optimus together with Ratchet’s assistance. It is shown in a DOTM prequel comic that he was killed by Shockwave and did not appear in DOTM.

Wheelie
Alt mode:
  • blue radio-controlled toy monster truck
Initially a Decepticon because he was afraid of them, but switched sides upon learning from Jetfire that he can choose to do so. He served as comic relief in the ROTF and DOTM films. He lives with Sam, Carly and Brains, another small Autobot whom he becomes friends with. It seems like he didn't survive after crashing a huge Decepticon ship with Brains during the Chicago invasion.

Dark of the Moon

Brains
Alt mode:
  • Lenovo ThinkPad Edge laptop (DOTM)
A small and intelligent Decepticon drone turned Autobot. He is a friend of Wheelie and lives with Carly and Sam. His fate is unknown after he and Wheelie successfully crashed a huge Decepticon ship during the Chicago invasion. Brains is still alive and returns in Age of Extinction, but in a decrepit state due to mistreatment of humans.

Dino
Alt mode:
  • red Ferrari 458 Italia
An Autobot Spy/Infiltrator that speaks with an Italian accent. He was responsible for killing one of the Dreads, Hatchet on the highway in DOTM film together with Bumblebee. Dino was hunted down and killed by humans prior to the events in Age of Extinction.

Que/Wheeljack
Alt mode:
  • blue Mercedes-Benz E550
An Autobot scientist and inventor, Que (also known as Wheeljack) will always provide new weapons and equipments that he just invented to the Autobots. His head design resembles Albert Einstein. He is later killed when Soundwave orders his execution; with an unidentified Decepticon in protoform shoots him in the chest and Barricade finishes him off.

Wreckers – Leadfoot, Roadbuster and Topspin
From left: Leadfoot, Roadbuster and Topspin.
Alt modes:
  • Leadfoot - armored version of the red #42 Earnhardt Ganassi Racing Target car. (DOTM)
  • Roadbuster - armored version of the green #88 Hendrick Motorsports AMP Energy/National Guard car. (DOTM)
  • Topspin – armored version of the blue #48 Hendrick Motorsports Lowe's/Kobalt car. (DOTM)
All three Wreckers transform into heavily armed NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chevrolet Impala stock cars. The Wreckers are a special task force, generally composed of the toughest die-hard fighters around in the Autobot ranks. The Wreckers are also Autobot mechanics who works with Epps at a NASA base to build the Xantium Autobot ship. Leadfoot is the leader of the Wreckers. They’re involved in the Chicago battle, providing a distraction to Shockwave to allow the others to escape and killed many Decepticons, including the large Devcon. They also help Optimus get out of a bad situation and assist Optimus in the counterattack on Sentinel Prime. It is hinted that Topspin and Roadbuster were hunted down and killed by humans before Age of Extinction. Leadfoot will make a brief appearance in Age of Extinction before being hunted down and killed by humans as well.

Evac
Alt mode:
  • blue emergency evacuation "supercar" vehicle
A young Autobot who exists in the Transformers Movieverse but only appears in Universal Studios Transformers: The Ride and not in the films.

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT:
Please do not proceed if you do not wish to know the characters and plot details.

Age of Extinction

Hound
Alt mode:
  • dark green Oshkosh Defense Medium Tactical Vehicle (AOE)
A heavily-armed technical specialist and highly experienced Autobot commando who will appear in Age of Extinction. His robot mode is modeled after a human commando with a beard. Calls Optimus as ‘Boss’, very loyal and always listens to the Autobot leader's command.

Drift

Alt mode:
  • 2013 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, blue Cybertronian attack helicopter (AOE)
An Autobot tactician. He is a Triple-changer and appears in Age of Extinction. His robot mode will be modeled after a samurai. He calls Optimus Prime as 'Sensei' and highly respects him as a leader. He think Bumblebee is still a 'kid' and should not be the one who leads them during Prime's absence. He will be riding with the Dinobot Slug.

Crosshairs
Alt mode:
  • green 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray (AOE)
An Autobot paratrooper with a Wrecker-type personality who likes to work alone. He will appear in Age of Extinction. He often argues with his Autobot comrades. His robot mode is modeled after a human paratrooper with goggles and sidearm machine guns. He will be riding with the Dinobot Scorn.

Dinobots
Drift riding Slug, Optimus riding Grimlock and Crosshairs riding Scorn;
Strafe is picking up Bumblebee.
Alt modes:
  • Grimlock - robotic horned Tyrannosaurus Rex.
  • Strafe – robotic two-headed and two-tailed Pteranodon.
  • Slug – robotic spiked and bestial Triceratops.
  • Scorn – robotic three-sailed Spinosaurus.
A group of arrogant but incredibly powerful legendary ancient black knight warriors who are capable of turning into huge robotic dinosaurs. They are able to sustain heavy damage and dislike taking or following orders from anyone. Grimlock is the leader of the Dinobots. The Dinobots were previously trapped in Lockdown's spaceship for unknown reasons. They were eventually set free by Optimus as he needed their assistance to defeat Lockdown and a huge army of Vehicons (human-made Transformers) that went out of control.
Grimlock breathes fire towards the Autobots.

  • By the end of Age of Extinction, there are 5 Autobots and 4 Dinobots remain on Earth: Bumblebee, Hound, Crosshairs, Drift, Brains, Grimlock, Scorn, Slug and Strafe.
  • Optimus Prime leaves Earth to protect it from the 'Creators' (there's a bounty on his head) and to hide the 'Seed'.
  • Ratchet and Leadfoot were hunted down and killed by humans in Age of Extinction.
  • Sideswipe, Dino, Roadbuster and Topspin were presumably hunted down and killed by humans prior to the events of Age of Extinction.
  • Wheelie presumably does not survive the Chicago invasion.

    1. Actually, there are only 4 dinobots in the movie. The rest (Snarl, Slash, Slog) didn't make it into the movie.
